Hey, I’m Joel

I'm dad to five wonderful kids (a cute little dog), husband to Tara who is amazingly supportive, and co-owner of a small website design company that I run with my friend Tommy. Everyday, I work with small business owners and non-profit or ministry leaders that struggle to get things out of their heads and into the world in a way people can understand and benefit from. That’s my struggle too.

I’ve spent most of my adult life stumbling on two parallel tracks: Being involved in some sort of church ministry while helping businesses and organizations communicate their message through design. It’s been an interesting process that constantly challenges me to adapt and grow.

On one side, I’ve been frustrated at times with the church that seems to have everything figured out about God and believe that it’s all spelled out clearly in the Bible, and on the other side, Entrepreneurs who don’t have the time to figure things out and believe that their new idea will succeed like a magical wish from a genie.

One one side, believers in Jesus who rely solely on “The Spirit” to lead them while doing very little necessary hard work, and on the other side, business owners who relentlessly pursue hard work, self promotion, and self improvement like a god.

I'm learning that it's not one or the other, it's both. This is my daily paradox.

We love the swinging pendulum of life as long as it stays on one side or the other (usually the side we’re most comfortable with). It’s either practical or spiritual, hard work or luck, divine blessing or hustle, strategic planning or happenstance. We hate the in between. The place between who we are and who we want to be. Between the world as it is and as it should be.

But the place between is where we spend our days. I believe there’s something to that tension. That’s what this blog is about. Sometimes I need practical strategies, sometimes its inspirational ideas, and other times I just need to hang out with friends or vent about my day.

But the place between is where we spend our days. I believe there’s something to that tension. That’s what this blog is about.

Bear with me as I struggle to get things out of my head and heart and into the world.

I’m learning as I write and live in... a place between.
