You Gotta Get Up

Have you ever had one of those dreams?
The kind that are so real, so terrifying, so freaking weird that you'd do anything wake up? It's amazing how everything seems so realistic and yet at the same time you know it's not. Somewhere deep down in the passageways of your mind, your telling yourself that you've gotta get up.
It reminds me of Christmas!...
We have a Christmas tradition that revolves around an old Rich Mullins song called "You Gotta Get Up!" It's kind of a magical song for our family, we play it every Christmas morning. The song is written from a boy's perspective waking up his parents, but most years, we get up first and wake up our kids with it. I would play it for you right now if I could. In the chorus, the boy is practically begging his parents to wake up!
There's an old story about a man named Jacob waking up. He had one of those weird kind of dreams too. It involved angels, ladders, voices from heaven and the ends of the earth.
Naturally he woke up. Then it hit him... He thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
Every morning Jacob wakes up, but that day, he woke up.
There's a time when something happens. When the world makes sense, when you have a divine encounter, when you realize that the presence has been there the whole time and you never knew it. It's unbelievable!
The Christian tradition thoughout the centuries has had a few words for it: Saved, converted, born again, transformed, seeing the light. But all words fall short when it comes to true awareness.
Jacob knew at that moment that he had been living his days asleep.
Life is calling out to us. God is calling our name, begging for us to wake up today, and tomorrow, and the day after that.
Love is here right now, the gifts are stacked high under the tree, the stockings are filled to the brim.
...You gotta get up, you gotta get up, you gotta get up, it's Christmas morning!"
